Work Begins on $10billion Saudi Aluminium Complex

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia : 20 June 2010

Work has commenced, by state owned Maaden (Saudi Arabian Mining Co) and aluminium producer Alcoa, on the creation of a $10billion aluminium complex, which will be the biggest in the world on completion.

A statement issued by Maaden said that ‘groundbreaking’ had now officially started and that construction of the mill and smelter at Ras Al Zour, and a Bauxite mine at Ba’aitha, is in development.

The two companies in the joint venture are aiming to have the complex fully operational by 2014 with hopes that it will be the ‘lowest cost supplier’ of aluminium products in the world.
