According to a recent report by an Advisors Group for the Middle Eastern region the UAE now has the largest number of mobile phone users within this region. A recent report by the telecom regulator in the UAE said that in December 2009 the UAE had the highest rate of market saturation within the Arab world. The number of people now using mobile phones has topped the 10 million mark, whereas four years ago it was only 2.5 million.
There are two telecom companies currently operating within the UAE these are known as the Emirates Telecommunication Corporation or Etisalat as it is more commonly known and the Emirate Integrated Telecommunications Company or du as it is more usually called. Just last week Etisalat said that their customer base has risen significantly in the last two years and at the end of 2009 it had reached 3,477,000 customers.
The report goes on to say that at the end of September 2009, 47 mobile phone companies in 17 different Arab countries claimed they had achieved growth of approximately 16.6% more than they had seen during 2008.
MobiNil, Vodafone Egypt and STC of Saudi Arabia were listed as being the largest mobile phone companies operating at the end of September 2009.
The last Arab State to allow a free reign Mobile phone market was Qatar which allowed competition into the market in December 2009 and this was with the advent of Vodafone Qatar Foundation Consortium.
