The 3rd Quarter of 2010 has seen a big increase in recruitment activity within the Telecoms Industry especially with more and more companies now looking to invest in the Region. The Gulf seems to be ‘THE’ place of choice for startup companies that fall under the ‘Telecommunications’ bracket.
A growing number of private equity and investment firms showed an interest in investing in the region in the last 6 months. According to Ian Stammers, Sales Director – ICT at ReThink Recruitment, “The sector looks very healthy which is good news for businesses and consumers”.
This year saw a major launch in the ICT industry – STC’s Viva brand in Bahrain who were awarded the 3rd Mobile License back in 2009. Another success was Samantel launch in Oman in August 2010. Samantel are the latest MVNO and are the 6th Brand on offer in Oman which shows positive growth
Before entering the market, Samantel conducted an extensive research to understand the potential for another player and if it was the right time for investment. They also closely studied the competitive environment and determined the product proposition and which kind of candidates to hire.
Based on their studies and research, they have developed a product promising “A life of happiness’ to their customers and the result is for everyone to see. In a short time they have made their presence felt and proved that they are there to stay.
Ayida Al-Riyami, Marketing Director at Samatel commented on the challenges for MVNO’s:
“The biggest challenge for any MVNO who enters Oman would be making their presence felt in the market and having the right tools and strategies to attract its customers. People nowadays are very smart and want to know everything about the product they are investing in, so getting the right tool and resources to meet their expectations are a challenge for every company”.
They have also diversified their investment in several projects. They have Sama Contact Centre which provides wide range of outbound call centre services tailored to fit everyone’s marketing strategy. What makes Sama Contact Centre stand out is that they offer the right mix of skilled personnel, technology and experience with the cost efficiency and offshore location.
Next year we will finally see one of the most anticipated launches in the Region with Yahsat launching their first Hybrid Satellite 1a. It will be providing data, voice, video and internet connectivity solutions for TV broadcasters, telecom operators, internet providers, government bodies and businesses. Also, earlier this year a strategic alliance was announced between Eutelsat and ictQatar to launch another Satellite Program which will provide coverage of the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) region.
Ian said: “I often speak with CEO’s and CFO’s from the UK, France and Germany who are keen to jump upon the opportunities presented in the GCC so I am positive that we will continue to see a steady growth over the course of 2011 and beyond”. He also noted that there are a lot of other companies that will be launching very shortly in the GCC however he couldn’t disclose who these businesses are at this stage.Andrew Reid, Staff Writer, Gulf Jobs Market News
