Minimum Wage in Omani Private Sector Expected to Increase

Oman : 14 February 2011

The push is on to increase minimum wage levels for those working in the private sector of Oman.

A decision resulting in the increase of minimum wage levels for workers in Oman’s private sector should come by week’s end, according to a recent statement by the minister of Manpower Shaikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al Bakri.

This move is a result of the attention garnered by Sultan Qaboos’ government in an attempt to provide a more decent standard of living to the citizens in the midst of an economic climate that is causing the cost of living to increase.

Al Bakri noted that the committee’s report, based on the study surrounding a potential minimum wage increase across the private sector workforce, has been submitted to those concerned.

The proposal of the committee is aimed at rectifying the status of national workers to keep up with modern living conditions and the requirements of them.

He specifically noted that the government is committed to securing appropriate factors and conditions that will stabilize the nation’s private sector workforce.

Al Bakri added that he appreciates how the private sector has cooperated and partnered with government, working together to overcome the challenges present in this sector’s workforce.
