Imminent Cyclone Threat to UAE Coast

Fujairah, UAE : 03 June 2010

Cylone Phet, a category 4 storm blowing of the Gulf,  is expected to bring rain and extremely high winds to the UAE coast today.

An emergency response team, comprising 57 men, has been placed on high alert and teams skilled in ‘rapid intervention’ were deployed in Fujairah, the north eastern emirate.

The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology also issued an alert saying winds of 35 knots per hour are anticipated across the country.

Fishermen in the Emirates have been told to stay out of the sea as the cyclone whipped up waves of 26ft some way off the coast of Oman with 13ft waves hitting the UAE coast a real possibility.   Motorists have also been subject to warnings, and told to drive with care in areas near the coast.

The cyclone has already caused chaos in Oman where the government were forced to evacuate some residents from areas expected to be hit by the storm.
