Gulf Mars Opens New Chocolate Factory as Rates of Diabetes Sour

Dubai, UAE : 27 May 2010

The GCC’s branch of the chocolate company Mars opened a new factory in Dubai on Wednesday as the company announced ‘double digit growth’ which has been sustained in the Gulf since the decade began.

Gulf net sales in 2009 were in excess of $450 million and Mars expressed its hopes to sell $1 billion of its chocolate to the GCC population by 2015.

The new factory opening comes at a time when health officials in the Gulf are encouraging healthy eating as rates for diabetes sour, with some estimates saying one in four UAE residents are living with the disease.

General Manager of Mars GCC, Ahmad Bayoumi, said that Mars had been extremely ‘active and responsible’ in its approach to the problems of diabetes in the region but that the high rates were attributable to ‘lifestyle habits’ as well as other factors.
