Elevator Sticks in the World’s Tallest Tower

Dubai, UAE : 10 February 2010

The Burj Khalifa, which towers at 828 metres above Dubai, is perhaps not the best place to get stuck in an elevator.  But it seems this is exactly what happened to some unfortunate tourists on a visit to the tower’s observation deck on Saturday evening.

Reports have come out of a loud crack being heard and smoke or dust appearing from an elevator door.  Fifteen people are thought to have been trapped between two floors, in terrifying circumstances, for almost an hour with rescuers finally dropping a ladder down to them so they could clamber out.

On Monday 8th February the tower’s owner, Emaar, announced that the observation deck had been temporarily shut down because of unspecified ‘technical issues with the power supply’.   They have yet to comment further.

The Burj Khalifa was opened on January 4 2010 making it the word’s tallest building.  The cost of construction is an estimated $1.5billion.
