Dubai Plans Security Cameras ‘Everywhere’

Dubai, UAE : 20 June 2010

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, police chief for Dubai, has announced that the emirate will see an expansion in its CCTV coverage with plans to spend $136million on new cameras.

The police chief that the cameras were needed in order to meet the ‘growing requirements’ of the ‘expanding’ city and suggested that Dubai will soon have cameras ‘everywhere.’ Tamim dismissed concerns about privacy, saying intrusion was ‘not allowed’ in law and not acceptable culturally.

According to the Lieutenant security cameras had played a key role in enabling Dubai’s authorities to identify the suspects in the murder of Mahmoud Al Mabhouh, an official for Hamas, who was found dead in hotel room in Dubai in January this year.

Security in Dubai is currently in the hands of 16,500 police officers and 4,000 support staff, with 25,000 surveillance cameras operating in the emirate.
