Determination Abounds at Today’s Abu Dhabi International Triathlon

Middle East : 13 March 2010

Abu Dhabi is awash with colour and activity today as they are hosting their annual International Triathlon. This is a grueling prospect for any athlete and requires great stamina and training to first complete a 3km swim near the Emirates Palace hotel this must then be immediately followed by a 200km cycle around the Abu Dhabi Island and if that isn’t enough it is then rounded off with a 20km run along the Corniche.

However Mohammed Lahna, who has now competed in more than 12 triathlons has more to contend with than most in order to compete in this event. Mohammed has no sensation or movement in his right leg and he has a condition known as agenesis which is a rare medical condition in which a limb fails to grow normally.

There are only a couple of Para-athletes competing in today’s Abu Dhabi International Triathlon. Mohammed was twenty eight last Thursday and competed in his first triathlon in 2008. Growing up he had never dreamed that such a feat would ever be possible for him and it was only in 2004 that his life took a turn for the better. Although he had a prosthetic limb before then it was primitive and cumbersome but it was the only one his family could afford. Until he met a team of French doctors who were visiting Morocco to train local technicians in the design and building of prosthetics.

Mohammed was a test patient so he got fitted with his new limb for free and has never looked back since then. That very same year he went on his first 500km motor bike ride up the Atlas mountains and from then on he really began to believe that anything was possible. He went on to compete in his first triathlon in 2008 in Yasmine Hammamet, Tunisia and has gone from strength to strength since then.
