Crescent and Rosneft Look For Gas in Sharjah

Sharjah, UAE : 06 June 2010

A ceremony, attended on Saturday by HH Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the deputy ruler in the emirate, and Russia’s deputy Prime Minister, Igor Sechin, kick started exploratory drilling in the ‘Madam – Al Nad’ onshore area in Sharjah.  The area, which covers a land mass of some 1243 kilometers, sits next to the Sajaa gas field, which has been prolific in its output.

The aim with most of Sharjah’s drilling is to discover natural gas, as opposed to oil, and the director of exploration at Crescent said the company was ‘quite confident’ of finding gas at the bottom of the well, but said ‘the issue’ was how to retrieve it.

President of Rosneft, Sergei Bogdonchikov, said the company believed that the lease would prove to be a ‘rich field’ and with an estimated recoverable reserve of  67.6 billion cubic metres of gas, he could well be right.
