Broadband Penetration Highest in Qatar ; Facebook and Twitter Take a Foothold

Qatar : 12 July 2010

Euromonitor Internationals recent country report seems to suggest that the Qatari nation and those that call Qatar home, are amongst the most web savvy amongst their Gulf neighbours. The report, released on Monday showed that broadband penetration grew from just under 7% in 2004 to almost 45% by the close of 2009. In the same period of time, the population of Qatar doubled to 1.6 Million, according to the Qatar Statistics Authority

Qatars broadband uptake outstrips all other GCC countries; the closest competition coming from Bahrain and Kuwait at 26% of households each; the UAE at 18 percent and Saudi Arabia trailing behind at just 8%.

Euromonitor continued by stating that Qatars growth in the number of fixed lines; 191,000 in 2004 to 274,000 in 2009 was largely fuelled by internet usage.

Facebook has also gained a strong foothold amongst the Qatari internet user base, with 37% of all internet users – 160,000 – being active on Facebook as of August last year – thus making Facebook the 4th most popular web site in Qatar. Twitter also made an entrance amongst the top 100 websites in Qatar.Facebook, as previously reported here, is more popular than newspapers in the Middle East, and is one of the most popular sites in the GCC – with 20% of internet users in both the UAE and Kuwait using the site in 2009.
