Capital Gate, in Abu Dhabi, has been certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s ‘Furthest Leaning Manmade Tower’ it was revealed on Saturday.
The announcement, made by the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company, said that the recognition had been given by Guinness after ‘rigorous evaluation.’
The 160 metre, 35 storey tower which tilts at an angle of 18 degrees, is thought to have one of the strongest reinforced cores of any tower in the world, using approximately 10,000 tonnes of steel. It leans at four times more of an angle than Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Shaikh Sultan Bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of Adnec, described Capital Gate as a ‘signature building’ which had now taken its place among the ‘world’s great buildings.’
The tower is the subject of a National Geographic documentary, expected to be transmitted next month, called ‘The Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi.’
