‘Gold to Go’ in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi : 15 May 2010

Abu Dhabi has opened the Gulf’s first ever gold vending machine in the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi.

The machine, which dispenses bars of gold weighing one, five or ten grams looks very much like an ordinary cash kiosk, except for its rather glitzy gold plated veneer.  But this is no ordinary ATM.  Passing visitors can stop off, slot a credit card into the machine, and purchase their own tiny gold bullion.  The machine updates the price of gold every ten minutes from its internal website.

The person who created the machine, Thomas Geissler, a German entrepreneur and Ex Oriente Lux’s Chief Executive said the Emirates palace had been chosen specifically as a home for the machine because the gold-to-go ATM ‘really fits’ with the hotel décor.

Well, at least that’s solved the problem of what to do when you wake up in the middle of the night with a desperate urge to buy gold, but only if you live and work in Abu Dhabi.
